At Eurosonic Noorderslag (ESNS) 2023, the Pop Musicians chain table presented, after a year of mutual consultation, an analysis of the income gap between current fees and an appropriate and fair remuneration (fair pay) for pop musicians. The conclusion of the analysis: an additional €7.8 million per year is needed for fair pay. The analysis and the accompanying report, The gap between effort and income of pop musicians, were conducted by consultancy firm Berenschot.

Following this, the chain table presented the first draft version of a calculation tool, which determines the minimum fee for a live performance on a stage based on five career phases. The Pop Musicians Calculation Tool is now finished and in use! Through 11 objective criteria, it is possible to identify which phase an act belongs to.

The chain table is now considering structural financing and the system that must ensure that additional fair pay resources actually reach the musician. In the panel ‘Fair pay on the VNPF stages, the next step’, fairPACCT program manager Noud van de Rhee, Jolanda Beyer from Patronaat, Rita Zipora from BAM! Popauteurs, Pien Feith from Friendly Fire, and Bastiaan Vinkenburg on behalf of Berenschot will discuss developments to date, plans for starting implementation in 2024, and the search for structural resources to make fair pay possible.
