Grand Rights
Grand rights and
fair pay
When the rights for a play, ballet performance, or musical need to be arranged, it is handled by someone with knowledge of grand rights. For many people in the cultural and creative sector, this is an unclear area. What exactly are grand rights, and when do they apply?
Even among experts, there are different ideas about this. The Grand Rights Chain Table is therefore starting by providing insight into how grand rights work and which parties play a role. Subsequently, the chain table will work on a standard agreement for composition commissions that fall under grand rights. Work is also being done on a tool to determine whether or not a composition falls under grand rights. Finally, the chain table is working on a short manual for composers who self-publish.
About the chain table
The chain table was established in March 2025 and consists of approximately twenty professionals. These include composers, representatives, broadcasters, publishers, clients, rights organizations, advisors, vocational training programs, and more. Led by an independent chair, they explore opportunities to stimulate fair pay within this field.
The chain table conducts its own research and commissions studies, performs analyses, and develops guidelines and tools: concrete products for practical application. Examples from the cultural sector and similar sectors are used for this purpose.
