Jazz / World / Contemporary Subsector

Do you work in the world of jazz, world, and/or contemporary music? Are you a composer or (composing) musician, programmer, or festival organizer? Then it is important to consider fair pay. What can you ask for your work as a creator or performing artist? What conditions apply? FairPACCT helps, with concrete guidelines and tools.

Composers and musicians deserve better

In the jazz / world / contemporary genres, fair pay can make a significant difference. When composers and musicians receive appropriate compensation for their work, they can develop more effectively. This is beneficial for them and for the sector as a whole.

At present, their labor position is vulnerable. This is due to the decreasing number of venues for performances. Furthermore, there is less space for these genres on radio and television.

To improve opportunities for musicians and composers in these genres, fairPACCT established the Jazz / World / Contemporary chain table. This group examines possibilities for realizing concrete improvements in compensation.

About the chain table

The chain table was established in April 2023 and consists of sixteen professionals from the field. Among them are composers and musicians, as well as employers, intermediaries, and representatives from vocational training and knowledge institutes.

Under the leadership of chairman Noud van de Rhee, fairPACCT program manager, the chain table conducts its own research or commissions it. In this way, the chain table analyzes bottlenecks and develops concrete tools and guidelines to improve the labor market position of musicians and composers in these genres. In doing so, examples from the cultural sector and comparable industries are utilized. The financial and substantive position of venues and festivals is also a point of focus for the chain table.

Tools & downloads

This report offers musicians and composers insight into appropriate rates and can be used when determining fees for performances and composition assignments. Thirteen related collective labor agreements (CAOs) were used as a frame of reference.
